Prepare for the new fish:
- Quarantine (Optional but Recommended):
If possible, quarantine new fish in a separate tank for 2-4 weeks to observe them for any signs of illness before introducing them to the main tank. At the very least, examine your new fish closely while in the bag for any signs of sores or parasites.
- Check Water Parameters:
Ensure your tank’s water parameters (temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate levels) are stable and suitable for the new fish. The water supports your fish.
- Test Water:
Test the water in the bag and in your tank to ensure the pH and temperature are similar. You need to prevent any shock to the new fish.
- *Feed Existing Fish:
Ensure your existing fish are well-fed before adding new ones to avoid any potential aggression.
If possible, clean the tank prior to adding new fish.
Acclimate your new fish:
- Float the Bag:
Float the bag containing the new fish in your aquarium for 15-30 minutes to allow the water temperature to equalize.
- Gradually Add Tank Water:
After the temperature equalizes, slowly add small amounts of tank water to the bag, allowing the fish to gradually acclimate to the water parameters.
- Carefully Net the Fish:
Once the fish are acclimated, carefully net them out of the bag and into the aquarium. Discard water from bag.
After Introduction:
- Monitor for Aggression:
Observe the new fish for any signs of bullying or aggression from the existing fish. Certain breeds of fish tend to be more aggressive. Know what community you are adding the new fish into.
- Maintain Water Quality:
Continue to maintain good water quality by performing regular partial water changes and cleaning regimen. Microbe-Lift/Special Blend and Gravel & Substrate Cleaner will do well in between cleanings.
- Observe for Disease:
Keep a close eye on the new fish for any signs of illness or disease. Be sure to catch any symptoms early. The earlier, the better the outcome to treatment. Do you have a hospital tank, in case of emergency?
- Darken the Room:
Keep the aquarium lights off for at least four hours after introducing the new fish.
