How do you do it?  Let’s face it, a vacation is important for your mental health and your physical health depends a lot on your mental health.  The rest of the time, your wet pets are your respite at home!  Okay, let’s look at some of the ways you can leave for 2-3 weeks and not neglect your aquarium friends:

  • If you are only leaving for an extended weekend, the fish will be fine. Nothing needs to be done.  But if you are leaving for several weeks, they will need some help.  Do you belong to a fish club, where a friend could come over once a week to check on your tank and filter?
  • There are automatic feeders that, set correctly, can feed once or twice daily. Always test the feeder to be sure the right amount of food is being delivered.
  • A good idea is to do the water change prior to leaving.
  • Write down precise directions for someone who will look in on the aquarium while you are gone. Let them feed pre-measured food once or twice per week that you have packaged in small containers.
  • There are aquarium services that will clean the aquarium if you will be gone for an extended period of time. Be sure to get references.  This is especially valuable with expensive marine fish.
