One day, I had a brainstorm… I thought it would be really nice to see Lotus coming up in the YARD, at places throughout the lawn! It was fairly easy to find volunteers to dig out the holes, almost like a chapter from Tom Sawyer. We made them 3-4’ deep and 4-5’ wide, just enough to make sure the plants will have enough depth not to ever freeze during winter and plenty of room for the plants to spread. Check your area frost zone to see how deep to plant yours.
What kind of Lotus? I chose the Bowl Lotus because they will not over-grow the small pond. Each pond will have a different type and color Lotus. This accents the lawn as a green pond. I have a friend upstate NY that specializes in Lotus, lilies and orchids. Once the ponds were dug and lined with EPDM for safety, we filled them with Microbe-Lift/Concentrated Aquatic Planting Medium. It was the beginning of summer, so we also added ML/Biological Mosquito Control to keep the neighbors happy.
The Lotus roots arrived!! It’s important to plant them as soon as they arrive. Each one had special care in planting, exactly as recommended from the provider. Within the next month we watched as leaves emerged and then finally a FLOWER! It was the most spectacular lawn in my county! The flowers come back every year, treating us with splashes of color!
