Getting your chickens ready for winter does not need to be such a tedious process, you just need to check off a few things from your checklist. What we live by is, “keep is simple, stupid!” Shining a light on this, we’re going to lay it out nice and simple for you, as promised.

THE COOP

Make sure to check if your coop has any holes and cracks. While you want to make sure there is some proper ventilation, you also want to eliminate drafts which could keep chickens from warming up, or even staying warm. An extra layer of shavings/bedding can help keep chickens stay nice and toasty, but you have to stay on top of cleaning on a more frequent basis. Why is this? Well, we recommend that the bedding should be cleaned often because the chickens will be spending more time in the coop leading to quicker accumulated feces and urine on the floor. Accumulated waste will cause the coop to smell, and can create respiratory issues for the birds.

Where some might think that in colder temperatures odors can sometimes be less noticeable, this certainly doesn’t mean you don’t need to clean. Regular use of Microbe Lift Coop Cleaner and Deodorizer will help speed the breakdown of waste while controlling ammonia & odor. You can also use an appropriate heater to keep temperatures in the coop above freezing, and comfortably for your precious birds.

FOOD & WATER

A purpose designed water heater should be used to keep their water from freezing. It is also worth noting that a nutritious feed should be given to them that is preferably higher in fat. We also advise feeding in the late afternoon in the colder months.

THE YARD

Nobody likes snow packed up in the driveway, so why would the chickens want it all over their home? It’s good practice to make sure to keep the outside area for your chickens as clear of snow and debris as possible. It’s also worth keeping an eye on the chickens when they are outside to to ensure that they don’t get frostbite.

EGG PRODUCTION

You can put some of your egg carriers away if your coop is going to be cold this coming winter, as egg-laying production tends to go down along with outside temperature. In order to improve production, you can take prompt action in heating the coop and/or adding an artificial light. Another thing that can help is adding extra calcium to their yummy diet.

IMPORTANT TIPS TO REMEMBER

  • Lock up your chickens at night.
  • Make sure the coop is secure from predators that might be looking for a meal.
  • Winterize and heat the coop as needed.
  • Keep the coop clean.
  • Provide a nutritious high fat diet.
  • Protect chickens from frostbite.
