Many of you will choose annuals to brighten up the spaces left by the spring bulbs that have gone until next year. Some of these annuals will be helpful in the food garden to keep wildlife away! But overall, they are the June favorites. Check your Plant Zone map for what is best for your area and decide on your color favorites for this year. Choose sun and shade lovers.
Marigolds are one of my vegetable garden favorites! Marigolds require ample sunlight to produce abundant blossoms. Choose areas with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. And they prefer well-drained soil to prevent root rot. It’s easy to collect seeds after bloom for next year.
Marigolds can be used to add color and interest along garden edges and pathways. They can also be appreciated in pots placed near patios and decks to repel mosquitoes.
Marigolds produce natural chemicals that repel various pests, including nematodes, aphids, whiteflies, and other insects. Their scent also deters certain pests from entering the garden.
Beneficial Insect Attraction:
Marigolds attract beneficial insects like ladybugs, hoverflies, and other predatory insects that help control pest populations. They also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, which are vital for plant reproduction.
Soil Health Improvement:
Some marigold species, particularly French marigolds, can help reduce nematode populations in the soil, improving overall soil health.
Companion Planting:
Marigolds are often used as companion plants, particularly in vegetable gardens, to help control pests and improve plant health. They can be planted around vegetable plants or even in the same rows as vegetables to deter pests.
Other Benefits:
Marigolds can also suppress weeds by creating a dense ground cover and attracting pollinators, which can contribute to higher yields in fruit and vegetable gardens.
In addition, try Zinnias, snapdragons, Calendulas, Impatiens, Canna, Begonia, Geranium, and an old favorite: Petunias.
For the Vegetable Garden: Corn, Butternut Squash, Pumpkins, and Watermelon! Start them early and enjoy them as they grow.
