This is a good time for gardening because the weather is cooling, making it more pleasant to work outdoors, giving opportunities to plant cool-weather crops, divide perennials, and prepare for the upcoming winter season. We can plant garlic, greens, kale, lettuce, peas, radish, and spinach, and also consider planting cover crops to replenish nutrients in the soil.

Additionally, it’s a good time to plant shrubs and trees, with fall being the ideal time for planting. While the trees and shrubs may not show much growth during winter, it is the roots that need to become established during winter.  With a good mulch, they will please you next season.  Remember not to add mulch against the stems.

You may want to plant asters for this fall and spring bulbs to greet the spring. It is a good time to collect seeds for next year or to swap with friends.

This is also a good time to start preparing houseplants for the move indoors instead of waiting until the last minute.
