When changing your aquarium water on a weekly basis, which is recommended, it restores the natural minerals to your fish that are depleted during the week. However, sometimes we have that “if one is good, maybe two would be even better” attitude. You don’t want to over-do a good thing. Doing 30-50% water changes in a normal, balanced tank can ruin the equilibrium. What you want is to restore the ecosystem to its best for your fish or corals, etc. We’ve found that doing 20% water change is ideal, or the highest amount that will do the job without changing the dynamics of your system.
When the tank is out of balance, the fish and other inhabitants become stressed. Use Microbe Lift/Special Blend and Clarifier Plus for small problems rather than removing too much water. If your pH is too low, check the KH (Carbonate Alkalinity) to make sure it is in the safe zone; if the KH is okay, then use the pH adjuster to raise it to where you want it for your fish. If you wait too long to do the (weekly) water change, you may find the phosphate going too high. In that case, in addition to the water change, use the Phosphate Remover.
And always remember, we are here for you at Microbe-Lift!
